Many Chinese youths without jobs return to live with their parents

Because they are unable to obtain employment, an increasing number of young Chinese adults are returning to live with their parents. Up to one in five young Chinese people are estimated to be unemployed at the moment. The circumstances are related to China’s efforts to recover from its COVID-19 policies, which included a weak employment market and a down economy. Chinese adult children have historically often continued to live in the same house as their parents and other family members. However, experts claim that the nation’s current economic climate is driving a large number of young adults, who are unemployed and struggling to make ends meet, to return home.

The 29-year-old Marguerite Wang is one such instance. After completing her undergraduate education, she relocated to the southern city of Shenzhen from her family’s house in northeastern China. Wang discussed her encounter with Associated Press reporters. She declared that she had relished living alone and in the city. However, she made the decision to return to her parents’ house in December after losing her job at a game firm. Wang claimed that she actively looked for a new employment in Shenzhen for six months. She decided it would be best to go back home when her efforts were in vain. She now spends her days studying Japanese and watching television in order to get ready to apply to master’s programs in Japan.

Wang told the AP that she now primarily visits her parents, who provide her with spending money. She is currently enjoying her calmer lifestyle at home. Furthermore, she is unsure about the next job she wants to pursue. Wang declared, “I don’t want to be in the same kind of work situation as before.” She continued by saying that her private life was not very active when she was working. She admitted, “I really had no idea why I was so busy.” According to official figures, the jobless rate for those between the ages of 16 and 24 in Chinese cities peaked in June at 21.3%. According to the AP, the Chinese government ceased releasing age-specific data in July. Some observers assumed that the politically sensitive statistics had increased even further as a result of this.
