There’s a new social media platform that users who don’t like how businessman Elon Musk has been managing Twitter can take into consideration. The Facebook and Instagram parent company, Meta, released the Threads app late on Wednesday. The application is referred to as Instagram’s text version; Instagram is primarily a photo and video sharing platform. It will serve as a venue for “real-time updates and public conversations,” according to Meta. Some users claim it has a Twitter-like appearance. Although it is primarily text, users can upload images and brief videos in addition to linking to their Instagram profiles. With 500 character limit, messages can be almost twice as long as those on Twitter (280 characters).
Individuals who already have an Instagram account will be able to import their followers into the Threads application. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, said that 10 million users registered in the first seven days. Instead of images and movies, Meta says it wants Threads to be “more focused on text and dialogue.” There are 100 nations where the app is accessible, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan. It hasn’t yet received EU approval. Individuals in Lebanon, Britain, and India reported having trouble viewing some of Zuckerberg’s early messages. Among the initial users were British chef and television personality Gordon Ramsay, Colombian singer Shakira, and American actor Jack Black.
Zuckerberg stated that creating a “friendly place” on Threads is something he hopes will be crucial to the platform’s development. Recently, a large number of Twitter users expressed their displeasure with several of Musk’s actions, notably the use of the Tweetdeck software and his requests for payment for verification. Additionally, he lowered the daily limit of tweets that a user could view. In 2022, Musk—the founder of Space-X and Tesla, two electric car companies—paid $44 billion to acquire Twitter. Concerns were raised by several internet experts who believed that by introducing Threads, Meta and Zuckerberg were taking on excessive responsibility. Due to declining profitability, the corporation has already spent money developing its “metaverse” and fired hundreds of employees in the previous year.
