Supplies and drinking water were transported by officials to the districts inundated by the southern Ukrainian Kakhovka dam collapse on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the dam broke, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes on both sides of the Dnieper River. The river is located in Kherson’s southern section. It divides the armed forces of Russia and Ukraine. Russia occupies the eastern side, while Ukraine maintains the western half. Because it is lower, flooding is more likely to affect the Russian side. About 3,000 people, according to officials, have evacuated regions that were inundated on both sides of the river. The actual scope of the calamity is still unknown, though. There are almost 60,000 residents in the impacted areas.
Authorities in areas under Russian control reported that about 1,300 people had been evacuated. In contrast, over 1,700 people were evacuated from the Ukrainian side, where there is a greater population. It was a huge dam constructed in 1956. It is 3.2 kilometers long and 30 meters tall. For a vast portion of southern Ukraine, it supplies water for agricultural and drinking as well as energy. It serves as the Crimean Peninsula’s main source of water as well. The majority of Western countries did not acknowledge Russia’s 2014 takeover of the region. It’s unclear what caused the dam to collapse. Russian military, according to Ukrainian officials, blew up the dam. They claim that this was done by the Russians to obtain military advantage in the conflict. Russia asserts that in order to cut off water to Crimea, Ukraine demolished the dam.
On the other hand, other analysts speculated that battle damage may have contributed to the dam’s collapse. It hasn’t generated electricity since November, and less has been done to maintain it in excellent shape. Additionally, the Dnieper River’s water levels and those of the reservoir behind the dam have been high recently, according to the British Ministry of Defense. The Ministry issued a warning, stating that over the coming days, the dam is probably going to weaken. This might worsen the flooding, it was said. on Kherson, people rode on boats or walked through the streets through water, holding firmly to personal goods. Social media footage featured rescuers hoisting victims to safety. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine will seek assistance from foreign groups.
