On Monday, the U.S. Navy released footage of what it described as a Chinese ship’s “unsafe” maneuver in the Taiwan Strait over the weekend. The body of water separating the island of Taiwan from the Chinese mainland is known as the Taiwan Strait. The American destroyer Chung-Hoon was the source of the video. It depicts a Chinese navy ship crossing the Chung-Hoon’s course. The destroyer swiftly decelerated, according to the U.S. Navy, to avoid a collision. The incident occurred on Saturday while the Canadian ship HMCS Montreal and the American ship were navigating through the waters between China and Taiwan.
Because it also claims the island of Taiwan as part of its territory, China claims jurisdiction over the Taiwan Strait. The United States and its allies frequently maneuver boats and aircraft through the region to demonstrate that it is an international waterway that is not governed by a single country. In the footage, the Chinese military vessel can be seen passing in front of the US ship at a distance of slightly more than 130 meters. After then, the Chinese ship makes a right turn and keeps traveling in the same direction as the US ship. The United States Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement that the action was against the regulations governing ocean travel.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry is Wang Wenbin. “Justified, lawful, safe, and professional,” was how he put it. The United States should consider its “wrongdoings,” he continued. Recently, the U.S. military accused China of deliberately directing an aircraft into the path of an American aircraft over the South China Sea. Political analysts worry that the near misses involving the US and Chinese militaries could spark a more severe incident.
