This year, US mass killings may set a tragic record.

Mass homicides in the US are expected to reach a record high in 2023. An attack in which four or more persons are killed, excluding the assailant or attackers, is considered a mass killing and typically involves the use of guns. In 17 attacks over a period of more than 100 days, this year’s bloodshed has claimed 88 lives. The year 2009 was the only one with as many tragedies in a similar time frame. A former student at a Nashville elementary school shot and killed children during a school day. Due to an argument, a coworker in Northern California sprayed farmworkers with gunshots. At a dance, a guy killed dancers who were celebrating the Lunar New Year.

In Dadeville, Alabama, on April 15, there were 32 injured partygoers and four fatalities. It was said that three young males opened fire during a 16-year-old girl’s birthday celebration in the town. A few days later, in Bowdoin, Maine, a man shot and killed four people, including his parents. Then he started shooting at passing cars on a busy roadway. It was his first time out of prison. “It’s not shocking at all,” Fred Guttenberg added. Jaime, his 14-year-old daughter, was one among the 17 victims who died at a Parkland, Florida, school in 2018. “I go to a graveyard to see my daughter. I feel so outraged, to even begin to express how I feel. Of the 2,842 victims of mass murder that have occurred in the United States since 2006, the Parkland victims are among them.

Based on a review of the information provided by those groups, mass murders occur, on average, once every 6.53 days. They are a minor portion of the annual deaths caused by violence in the United States. For more than half of the database’s years, there were no more than 30 mass homicides in the United States. The number of mass shootings in the United States this year has not indicated that it will be the most violent. 2009 saw a slowdown in the violence, with 172 fatalities and 32 mass killings by year’s end. These figures are marginally higher than the 31.1 mass murders and 162 victims annually on average that the AP and USA Today data indicate.
