The horrific mass shooting that took place in the Californian community of Monterey Park, close to Los Angeles, on Saturday night is being looked into by police. Ten persons were killed in the gunman’s attack at the dance school Star Ballroom Dance Studio, five of whom were women and five of whom were males. The city is well-known for its Lunar New Year’s celebration and is home to a majority Asian-American community. This was the first time traditional dances and a parade have been organized since the COVID-19 Pandemic began in 2020. But because of the incident, organizers called off Sunday’s activities. Security was stepped up in other neighboring cities.
The gunman’s body, identified by the authorities as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, was discovered on Sunday, they said. After the attack in Monterey Park, according to the police, the gunman attended a different dancing school in a nearby city. But the gunman was disarmed, and he ran away. A search was conducted after authorities noticed a white van close to one of the attacks, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. Police discovered the body of the suspect inside the van on Sunday. Luna claimed there were no other suspicions.
The gunman’s motive, or justification, for the crime remains unclear, Luna added. The incident also resulted in ten further injuries. As of Monday, seven were receiving care in a hospital. Although Luna did not disclose the victims’ ages, she did note that they all seemed to be older than 50. Chu added, “You are no longer in danger. The community was in fear, thinking they should not go to any events because there was an active shooter.” There are many Chinese living in the neighborhood. One hundred thousand people were predicted to visit the area for the Lunar New Year festivities. According to the Associated Press (AP), this was January’s fifth mass shooting. According to the AP, a mass shooting occurs when the gunman is not the only one killed—four or more people must perish.
