Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, has come under fire from a prominent member of the war cabinet for allegedly lying about the military objectives in Gaza. Mr. Netanyahu has stated that the offensive will continue “until complete victory” and openly opposed US efforts to establish a future state for the Palestinian people. However, Gadi Eisenkot claimed that those calling for Hamas’ “complete defeat” were not “speaking the truth.” The son of the former general lost his life in combat in Gaza.
In addition, he called for new elections, claiming that there was “no trust” in Israel’s existing government and that Mr. Netanyahu bore “sharp and clear responsibility” for failing to defend his nation on October 7. In their unexpected assault on, Hamas captured 240 prisoners and killed almost 1,300 people. As the divide between Israel and its Western friends deepens, there are rumours of tensions within the cabinet, including a lack of communication between the prime minister and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. John Kirby, the national security adviser for the White House, stated that Israel and the US “clearly see things differently” in response to Mr. Netanyahu’s remarks regarding Palestinian statehood.
According to a State Department spokesman, Israel’s security issues cannot be resolved in the absence of a Palestinian state. According to the White House, during their first phone conversation in almost a month on Friday, President Joe Biden and Mr. Netanyahu spoke about a two-state solution. Subsequently, during a press conference in Washington, Mr. Biden responded, “No, it’s not,” to a reporter who inquired about the possibility of a two-state solution while Mr. Netanyahu was in office. Two-state solutions come in several varieties. Mr. Biden stated, “There are several UN members that do not possess their own armed forces. However, Mr. Netanyahu has devoted his professional life to opposing the creation of a Palestinian state and claimed last month that he was happy to have stopped it.
