The CEO of Nvidia traveled quietly to Beijing

For his first visit to the Chinese mainland in a number of years, Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, traveled to Beijing to attend the firm’s 2024 Beijing New Year Party. Nvidia is a US artificial intelligence chip business. Huang has also made low-key office visits this week to Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen in the Guangdong province, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke with China Daily.

Huang performed a dance for Nvidia’s staff during the company’s new year’s celebration in Shanghai while dressed in traditional northeastern Chinese attire, according to images and videos that others, including Nvidia workers, posted on social media. Huang’s visit coincided with the US government’s ban on Nvidia selling its most cutting-edge AI chips to China, according to anonymous sources cited in the Wall Street Journal. These sources claim that leading Chinese cloud providers have informed Nvidia that they would rather use domestic chips from firms like Huawei rather than the company’s slower AI chips.
