Syria claims that Israel targeted locations near Homs

Israel is accused by the Syrian army of hitting sites in the Homs region, which is located just north of Lebanon, killing or wounding numerous civilians. According to Syrian official television, Israeli missiles were shot down by Syrian air defenses. The Reuters news agency quoted a Syrian military source as stating that the attacks targeted the Shuyrat air base and other locations close to the city of Homs. Israeli assaults on sites backed by Iranian-sponsored militias have intensified since the start of the Gaza conflict in October. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, reported that the attacks on Tuesday night had claimed the lives of four civilians.

According to Reuters, Syrian state media said that it was unable to confirm the location of the airstrike but showed ambulances racing to the site where debris from a structure could be seen. The Syrian Observatory informed the AFP news agency that two civilians were among the deceased. For years, Israel has launched military operations in Syria against targets it claims have ties to Iran. It seldom, though, offers commentary on specific blows. Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war, Iranian forces have been stationed in the country, aiding President Bashar al-Assad’s administration in putting down a broad uprising. Following the death of three US service members in Jordan last week, the US targeted locations in Syria and Iraq that it claimed had ties to Iran.
