China’s expanded and varied interactions with Africa

With the upcoming Ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in China, 2024 is shaping up to be a significant year in the dynamic field of Sino-African ties. FOCAC 2024 is a year to look forward, reviewing the results of many efforts in the Africa-China arena and discussing future directions. It also represents a renewed commitment to strengthen collaboration between China and Africa. In the midst of this historic occasion, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi just returned from his annual first-trip abroad, which he took to Africa. With Wang’s visit, Africa has been the first overseas trip for the Chinese foreign minister for 34 years running.

In the context of larger Africa-China engagement, his trips to Egypt, Tunisia, Togo, and Cote d’Ivoire are highly significant from a diplomatic standpoint. Beyond the official platforms of the FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative, the visits not only provide a powerful signal about the future direction of Africa-China collaboration, but also act as a dynamic channel for strengthening bilateral cooperation, addressing issues of mutual benefit, and setting the stage for a future marked by strengthened diplomatic ties.

China’s diplomatic relations with the four countries were evaluated during Wang’s most recent trip to Africa, with an emphasis on important areas like the economy, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, education, and culture. The significance of the relationships between China and Tunisia, which will celebrate 60 years this year, and Togo, which have lasted more than 50 years, were emphasized, as well as China’s unwavering support for the ongoing development of political mutual trust. Regarding Wang’s visit to Cote d’Ivoire, the focus was on the friendship and development partnership between the two nations, which is producing some observable, mutually beneficial outcomes. Most notably, China’s contribution to Cote d’Ivoire was highlighted when the country hosted and won the 34th Africa Cup of Nations, which showcases the many facets of collaboration.
