Christie Chue of Singapore wins the Outstanding Swimmer award at the US tournament with five golds

Christie Chue found herself pinching herself once more, over three years after she questioned whether an Instagram offer to study and train at Florida International University (FIU) was a hoax. She concluded her career in the American Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on February 25 with a bang, taking home five golds, one silver, and one bronze to lead her team to its first-ever American Athletic Conference (AAC) title. They had placed second in 2023, 11.5 points adrift of University of Houston. The Panthers won this time around, finishing first in the seven-team standings with 778.5 points. Third place went to Rice University (593), followed by Southern Methodist University (666).

Chue set championship records in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.99) and won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke (59.25 seconds), 200-yard individual medley (1 minute 57.21 seconds), 200-yard medley relay (1:38.15), and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:09.88) at the Robson and Lindley Aquatics Centre and Barr-McMillion Natatorium in Dallas. The AAC Most Outstanding Swimmer award went to the Singaporean. “This is my last year at FIU and I wanted to end with a bang,” stated 23-year-old Chue. It’s good to earn these and cap up my AAC career the way I wanted, as I nearly missed out on the 200-yard breaststroke meet record and Most Outstanding Swimmer of the meet the year before.

For more focused training, we tried something new this year and divided into four groups: long distance, upper-middle distance, lower-middle distance, and sprints. We came so close to winning our first AAC championship as a team last year, so we truly wanted it. We won this year because of the athletes’ and coaches’ tremendous efforts as well as the team’s strong support system. Chue was commended by Singapore swimming coach Gary Tan, who remarked, “She has done a tremendous job preparing herself… It’s wonderful to watch her develop into a team leader. We anticipate Christie having an influence on her comeback.
