The eight-day Spring Festival holiday saw 474 million trips made inside the domestic tourist industry, according to data from the Ministry of Culture and tourist. This represents a 34.3 percent year-over-year rise and a 19.0 percent increase over the same holiday period in 2019, as reported by ThePaper on Tuesday. Over the vacation, domestic tourism-related revenues were 632.69 billion yuan ($94.9 billion), up 7.7 percent from the same period in 2019 and 47.3 percent year over year. According to ThePaper’s preliminary statistics, 17 of the 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous areas that released information about tourism related to the Spring Festival reported revenue above 10 billion yuan.
Province Guangdong distinguished itself as the top performer in terms of revenue and visitor arrivals. It received 76.07 million tourism-related visits and generated 69.36 billion yuan in income from them. With 60.48 million tourism trips, Sichuan province came in second, ahead of Jiangsu province with 55.48 million. With more over 50 million tourism trips, Henan province came in fourth. Yunnan province ranked second in terms of revenue with 63.74 billion yuan. Jiangsu province, Zhejiang province, Liaoning province, and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region all reported tourism income of more than 40 billion yuan. In terms of growth rate, 24 of the 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous areas stated that visitor arrivals were higher than they were during the same time previous year.
When compared to the same period in 2019, fifteen regions saw an increase in visitor arrivals. There may be a spike in travel interest during this year’s May Day break, with some tourists pre-purchasing tickets for the National Day holiday in October. According to Tongcheng Travel, a Jiangsu province-based travel firm, as of March 5, there has been a more than 50 percent year-over-year rise in consumers expressing early interest in reserving travel tickets for the May Day holiday this year. For the May Day holiday, there is a high demand for hotels in places like Chongqing, Changsha, Xi’an, Nanjing, Nanchang, Wuhan, Tianjin, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Qingdao.
