A new “best-in-class” indoor arena will replace Singapore Indoor Stadium

With the development of a new indoor arena to replace the historic Singapore Indoor Stadium (SIS), which has stood for more than three decades, the Kallang Alive precinct is set for an exciting addition. Minister Edwin Tong of Culture, Community, and Youth revealed the new facility’s design on March 7 during a legislative discussion on his ministry’s budget. Mr. Tong stated that the arena will be constructed next to the existing SIS location and that it will be among the “best in class globally.”

To minimize disturbance to the schedule of events and programming, which can go on while the new indoor arena’s development, the 12,000-seat indoor stadium will stay open until the new indoor arena is built. A timetable for the start of construction is not available because planning is still in its early phases. We’ll release more information later on, including what will happen to the current indoor stadium. Mr. Tong continued, saying that the new arena has to be “future-proofed” and have a capacity at least equal to that of the SIS. He also said that holding prestigious international events is lucrative and in high demand. If we hope to draw elite events in the future, we must also keep innovating and changing since our rivals are not standing still.

“We think this is the right time to build a new indoor arena that will rank among the world’s best in its class. We have visited and observed some of the world’s top arenas in order to get knowledge from them. He went on to say that the government is thinking of building an arena that can hold more elaborate events, can quickly adapt to different kinds of events and have a flexible schedule, and can provide better overall seating and experience for spectators with more varied hospitality suites.
