These days, full-day baby care costs range from $1,180 to $3,500 per month for childminding services

Ms. Luiza Lee’s two sons, ages four and four months, are cared for by their parents on a regular workday, with her domestic helper taking care of home chores. But when she needs extra assistance—for example, when her older son is sick and unable to go to preschool or when her parents are unavailable—she turns to Aunty SG, which offers on-demand childminding services. Ms. Lee, 33, began utilizing Aunty SG following the birth of her older kid. Ms. Lee, an employee in the investment management sector, stated: “I enjoy the adaptability of ad hoc services.” Child care facilities are more grid-like and regimented.

In addition, she wants a childminder to visit her home because, among other things, she doesn’t know who else lives there. The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) is introducing a new childminding plan in the second half of 2024 to give parents another alternative for newborn care, according to a statement made on March 6 by Minister of State for Social and Family Development Sun Xueling. According to Ms. Sun, the ministry intends to maintain childminding rates that are comparable to what a family with a median income spends for newborn care at facilities managed by anchor operators, after subsidies. This amount equals approximately $700 per month.

According to an MSF representative, these median income families make between $10,500 and $12,000 a month as a household. They further specify that they are talking about households that have at least one preschool-aged Singaporean child. Families will be able to use the Child Development Account (CDA) to help further cover the cost of the service, Ms. Sun continued. Anchor operators receive government funding to help offset costs in exchange for following quality standards and charge caps, while the CDA is a special savings account for children that can be used to pay for healthcare and pre-school expenses. The parent, Ms. Lee, expressed her gratitude for any kind of assistance.
